ACCIDENT DETAIL: Twenty five minutes after take-off the aircraft was seen to rejoin the circuit and to begin an approach, wheels down with smoke coming from the belly of the machine in front of the rear engine. An explosion was heard and a fire in the rear fuselage was seen. The aircraft entered a shallow dive in a wide turn to port, finally impacting Cove village school. Six people were injured on the ground. The flying of German aircraft was strictly limited thereafter

ACCIDENT DETAIL: A few minutes after take-off, the aircraft was seen approaching Defford in a shallow dive at about 450 m.p.h. It entered a sharp climbing turn streaming wingtip vortices and at about 1,500ft the starboard wing detached and the Meteor disintegrated

ACCIDENT DETAIL: The Rolls-Royce Eagle engine suffered a failure of the pitch translation bearing whilst returning to Yeovil. This caused the rear unit of the propeller to move into superfine pitch, leading to dramatic loss of thrust and increase to drag and torque. The pilot made a forced landing but was probably rendered unconscious by a section of prop blade which penetrated the cockpit. He perished in the subsequent fire

ACCIDENT DETAIL: Towed to 10,000ft by Halifax tug. After second stall glider entered stable stall with trim set nose-down to reduce stick loads. The glider defied the pilot’s efforts to unstall it until he raised the flaps and put the nose down into a dive, which proved impossible to recover owing to the trim set. The glider bunted at –5g, and the FTO baled out. The pilot failed to do so before aircraft hit the ground inverted
